Regals drop opener to Mohawks, 11-6, in front of packed house

Photo by Rob Massey of the Guelph Sports Journal

The 2018 season began for both the Guelph Regals and Elora Mohawks on Friday night when the two teams faced off at Victoria Road Arena in the Royal City.

The Regals, loaded with a team of young players looking to help the team qualify for the playoffs after missing the post-season last year, welcomed an experienced Mohawks team that, on-paper, is built to contend for the Ontario Junior “B” Lacrosse League title this season.

Despite the loss, the Regals were happy with the effort from their team.

It was the first time the team had played a full game with each other after a previously scheduled exhibition game versus Halton Hills was canceled due to an ice storm last Sunday.

After falling behind 5-1 in the 1st period, Guelph fought back and trailed 7-5 after 40 minutes. The game was 8-6 in the 3rd period before Elora potted three unanswered goals in the last 10 minutes of the game to collect the two points with an 11-6 victory.

HIGHLIGHTS & POST-GAME REPORT

Rob Massey of Guelph Sports Journal was on hand and has a full game report with quotes from coaches and players of both teams. You can read the full article over on the GSJ website.

519SportsOnline was also in attendance and captured highlights of the game, which you can view on their website here.

Always A Regal: Exhibition Game proceeds to go to former player after house fire

James Short

The Guelph Regals organization pride themselves on maintaining a Family culture.

Like in any family, when a member is faced with an unfortunate circumstance, the rest of the family does not hesitate to step up and help however they can.

So when the Jr. B’s learned that former Regals player James Short’s house was destroyed by a devastating fire on Monday, March 29, where James and two other roommates escaped with just the clothes on their backs in a matter of seconds, the organization reached out to James to let him know they still have his back.

When the fire began on Monday afternoon, it was reported that three of the seven people who lived at the residence were home at the time. Reports say that the house is “a total loss” and that the boys had just “seconds to get out” because of how fast it happened.

Two of them were sleeping and were woken up by fire alarms. All seven residents are students at the University of Guelph. They lost textbooks, computers, drumsets, guitars, recording equipment, and much more in the fire.

To help James and his roommates recover from the losses, the Jr. B Regals organization will be donating all admission proceeds from their Exhibition Game on Sunday, April 14 versus Halton Hills to James. The game begins at 4:00 PM at Victoria Road Arena in Guelph, and the organization is asking for a minimum $5 donation to attend the game.

If you are unable to attend the game but would still like to help out, you can donate to their GoFundMe page: https://www.gofundme.com/help-hoops.

The Regals are thinking of you, James!
